Working at Home

Does your company allow home working?Perhaps it is actively encouraged or, more likely, is your organisation one that totally bans the practice of employees working from home?

Whilst in some businesses, having employees working from home just does not work, a shop can not function if the sales staff are not physically present in the shop, for many service organisations, their staff could be based anywhere.

Just as improvement in technology allows various company offices to be electronically linked, employees can be electronically connected to your office, even if they are located in a spare room at home.

This technology includes VoIP (Voice over IP, allows telephone calls to be routed seamlessly using the internet backbone and a broadband connection) and IT that enables remote computer access to a company network, again via the internet.

The natural concern may be if the employer can not see the employee, what checks are there to ensure they are working on company business at the correct times? There is of course an element of trust but if a structure can be agreed, there are potential benefits for both employer and employee.
